Domus Picturae is pleased to announce "Chromatic Fields", the first major solo exhibition of Emma Thompson's recent abstract works. Opening June 5, 2025, the exhibition presents over twenty new paintings created between 2023 and 2025, marking a pivotal moment in the artist's exploration of colour, gesture and emotional resonance.
Thompson's work has long been recognised for its ability to bridge Eastern and Western artistic traditions, creating compositions that feel simultaneously familiar and foreign. In "Chromatic Fields", she pushes this synthesis further, developing a visual language where colour becomes a form of communication that operates beyond words.
The exhibition is organised into three thematic sections. The first, "Tension and Harmony", features large-scale canvases where bold colour fields interact with gestural marks, creating dynamic compositions that evoke emotional states and psychological landscapes. Works like "The Space Between Thoughts" (2024) and "Weight of Silence" (2025) demonstrate Thompson's ability to translate intangible experiences into visual form.
The second section, "Layers of Memory", presents paintings that have undergone extensive revision and erasure — a process that Thompson describes as "a dialogue between control and release". These works reveal traces of earlier decisions, creating depth and complexity that mirror the layered nature of human memory.
The final section, "Rhythm of Breath", includes more intimate studies where Thompson explores the relationship between colour and rhythm. These smaller works, often created in single sessions, capture moments of spontaneous expression while maintaining the contemplative quality that defines her practice.
In preparation for the exhibition, Thompson spent several months in her Rome studio, creating new works specifically for this presentation. "There's something special about creating work with a specific space in mind," she explains. "The architecture of Domus Picturae, with its natural light and intimate scale, influenced the direction of these paintings."
"Chromatic Fields" runs through August 15, 2025, with an opening reception on June 5 from 6–9 PM. A fully illustrated catalogue accompanies the show, featuring an essay by curator Maria Santos and an interview with the artist.
