Domus Picturae is proud to present "Spatial Dialogues", a major new site-specific installation by James Park. Opening April 5, 2025, the installation transforms the gallery's main exhibition space into an immersive environment that challenges conventional perceptions of form, space and materiality.
Park's work has long been recognised for its investigation of the relationship between sculpture and architecture, between object and environment. "Spatial Dialogues" represents the culmination of two years of research and development, created specifically for Domus Picturae's architectural space.
The installation consists of a series of interconnected sculptural elements that respond to the gallery's architecture — its natural light, its proportions, its flow of movement. Park has worked with materials including steel, glass and reclaimed wood, creating forms that appear to both emerge from and recede into the space. The works are positioned to create sightlines and pathways that guide visitors through a choreographed experience of space and form.
"Each element is in dialogue with the others and with the architecture itself," Park explains. "I'm interested in how we perceive space, how our bodies move through it, and how objects can alter our understanding of the environments we inhabit."
Park's process involves extensive site visits and digital modelling before beginning physical construction. For "Spatial Dialogues", he spent several weeks in the gallery space, studying how light moves through the room at different times of day and how visitors naturally navigate it. This research informed the final placement and orientation of each element.
The installation includes both freestanding sculptures and wall-mounted elements, creating a layered experience that rewards extended viewing. Some pieces are designed to cast shadows that become integral to the work, while others incorporate reflective surfaces that multiply and fragment the space.
"Spatial Dialogues" marks Park's first major installation in Italy and represents an important moment in his relationship with Domus Picturae, which has represented him since its opening. The installation remains on view through June 20, 2025, with special viewing hours available for groups and educational institutions. Park will give an artist talk on April 10 at 6 PM.
